Westpunt Riders Youth Bike Club News  November 2011

Watamula Race 2011 — Although we are plagued with rain at our event the people love it here in Westpunt. There is magic in this place that cannot be denied! Our first ever adult race was a success (in my opinion) even if the amount of racers was low. We offer GREAT thanks to all the riders that came out to race with us. Special thanks have to go to Team Sorsaka for showing up in large numbers and competing with us. We were also joined by Curacao's national champ Marc de Maar. Who, even with flat tires and a hard tail (not the recommended ride for Watamula) still managed a win.

Day two of racing came to me 1 hour late! Sorry to everyone that was expecting the race organizer to be on time. Even with my tardiness we managed to get things started and finished without too much trouble. Our volunteers were great and plenty. Thanks to a few locals Tanya and the Poulo family for the extra effort and of course coach Dirk Van Helden. Without Dirk's tireless work trail building, marking trails and all the extras he does this race would not happen!

Sponsors? RBTT, Dasia Sports, Cost u Less, Coca Cola, Westpunt Riders loves you guys !!!

There is always crying, laughing, frustration and excitement. All the things that make competition what it is. To all the kids from age 6 -18 we love that you participate in cycling and for me especially mountain biking. Without the interest in this sport I could not introduce my new friends here in Westpunt to what I believe is important. The beautiful places of the world are becoming less every year. We humans have a large impact on how these places will be preserved. I hope that by enjoying the hills of Watamula today these kids will grow to defend it. Resorts are growing ever closer bringing money and jobs. It will be a very difficult job to keep Watamula a beautiful place.
Westpunt Riders thanks everyone that has taken an interest in us. We hope to continue introducing children to the sport of mountain biking for years to come. The spirit of competition helps to build character. This character is an essential part of being a strong, productive person in this society. Thank you all and we'll see you at the Up Hill Challenge & Ride for the Roses in January 2012.
